Product Designer / Design Engineer
About Artificial
We’re building technology for the next generation of specialty insurers and brokers.
At Artificial, our mission is clear: to build the specialty (re)insurance landscape of the future. Our pioneering technology is revolutionising how insurers and brokers operate in complex markets. By removing the mundane and repetitive, we're paving the way for opportunity, innovation and efficiency in the industry.
At Artificial, you’ll be working with talented people, using the latest technology in an environment where learning is supported. As an outcomes-focused business, taking ownership is not only expected but embraced, meaning the opportunity to create meaningful change is within your power.
In 2024 we secured £8M in Series A+ funding, led by Europe’s premier publicly listed fintech fund, Augmentum Fintech, with participation from existing investors MS&AD Ventures and FOMCAP IV. We work with some of the world’s leading brokers and top-performing insurers in London and beyond.
Join us, and take the chance to be a part of something that is already changing the industry for the better.
Role background
You’ll join a small team of experienced product designers and design engineers working on the Artificial Platform.
We’re launching an ambitious effort to improve our product quality and user experience in 2025. We're looking for senior designers (and design engineers) who are excited by the prospect of working on complex, thorny problems and creating elegant, scalable solutions that get shipped.
Your role and responsibilities
Product work at Artificial follows an adapted Shape Up methodology, alternating between major feature development ("Bets") and ongoing iterative improvements. You will:
- Lead discovery and shaping phases: defining customer problems and identifying high-level solutions in collaboration with customers and internal stakeholders.
- Build working prototypes using Figma, React, and our existing codebase.
- Create UX flows and high-fidelity visuals.
- Own design direction on cross-functional Bet teams. You’ll be responsible for the quality of the end-user experience and finding elegant design solutions to complex problems.
- Improve product usability and performance through iterative improvements (often in collaboration with other teams).
- Expand our React-based design system (of components and primitives) using Storybook.
- Participate in weekly design critiques and ad-hoc design pairing sessions with other team members.
- Help champion the role of design across the business
About you
Essential
- You’ve worked as a designer for 8+ years.
- You thrive in a scale-up environment, where you'll have significant autonomy but must balance multiple priorities and customer needs.
- You're proficient in modern JavaScript/TypeScript and React. While you won't be expected to lead frontend engineering, you can contribute to production-quality experiences and understand how design choices impact frontend engineering feasibility, performance and maintainability.
- You excel at advocating for your ideas—both verbally and in writing—while remaining receptive to feedback and adapting your approach to ship effective solutions.
Desirable
- Experience building and maintaining design systems (and use of primitive components).
- Experience designing for complex domains (e.g. insurtech, fintech or healthcare) and on B2B SaaS products.
- Experience working in distributed teams at startups/scale-ups.
- Although the design team is distributed, we aim to meet face-to-face when it makes sense. Ideally, you’ll be willing and able to visit our office in London occasionally.
